Beach Volleyball Data
With the AVP season just around the corner (Huntington Beach on May 3-5), I thought it would be a good time to refresh the beach volleyball match database
The database now contains matches from the year 2000 all the way until April 6th, 2019.
Let’s examine some recent trends with the data update!
Phil Dalhausser/Nick Lucena (dashboard link)
Our updated Beach Volleyball Player Dashboard (read our intro post about it here) has the 2019 FIVB Doha Tournament showing Phil Dalhausser playing with Nick Lucena and losing in the finals:
If we filter our dashboard to Phil and Nick on the FIVB tour, they had a slight blip last year in 2018, winning only 66% of all of their matches:
* Color represents round, darkest = finals, lightest = qualifying/country quota matches
With their finals appearance in Doha and the AVP season about to get underway, they’re off to a good start in 2019!
Riley Mckibbin/Maddison Mckibbin (dashboard link)
I’m a big fan of the MCKB Youtube video tutorials, so let’s check some of their stats:
Maddison Mckibbin has played with a few different partners, including Reid Priddy. Based on their win %, it appears that they’ve been the most successful. However, there are some considerations to think about:
- They’ve only played 2 tournaments and 11 matches together so it’s not a big enough sample to draw any conclusions
- They won 3 qualifying matches, won 4/6 contenders bracket matches, and lost all 2 winner’s bracket matches, so they were only winning in the early/consolation rounds.
* Partner height is in inches
Riley and Maddison’s win % has gone down each year since 2016. However, they have been playing less qualifying rounds (yellow) and more winner’s bracket rounds (darker green) in 2018 as compared to 2016. They face tougher opponents in the later stages of the tournament, so the simple win/loss % metric doesn’t tell the full story.
Hoping they have success in 2019 and looking forward to their new videos!
Anders Mol/Christian Sorum (dashboard link)
They’re currently the #1 team in the FIVB Beach Volleyball Rankings, winning 4 out of 5 finals on the FIVB World Tour:
- Las Vegas
- Hamburg
- Vienna
- Gstaad
They’re in a good position to stay on top of the FIVB rankings in 2019!
April Ross/Alix Klineman (dashboard link)
On the women’s side, April Ross and Alix Klineman have been successful on both the AVP and FIVB tours, winning 6 titles out of 7 finals last year, with 4 titles out of 5 finals on the AVP tour.
April Ross’ winning % with Klineman is 2nd only to her record with Kerri Walsh Jennings.
Look for them to continue their dominance on the AVP tour this year!
Sara Hughes/Summer Ross (dashboard link)
Sara Hughes has been improving every year on the AVP tour. She played 4 tournaments, 20 matches, and won over 80% on the tour in 2018 with her new partner, Summer Ross.
They made 4 finals, winning 2. Their two losses were against Alix Klineman and April Ross.
They also played on the FIVB tour in 2018, winning in Moscow, and finishing 3rd in Yangzhou and Espinho.
Look for them to continue their success into 2019!
